On Friday I did a 4 mile run. 🏃🏻‍♂️ Around half way, a Red-tailed Hawk flew low over my head and struck at prey in the lawn across the street. Then, before I could get my phone out, flew up into a tree. You can see it there: the bird-shaped smudge about 2/3rds up.

  1. So cool! I definitely see more raptors during my winter runs than in summer; I think the red-tailed hawks are year-round residents but we get bald eagles in the winter.

  2. After decades without them, we’ve had a nesting pair of Bald Eagles just a few miles from where I live, and I’ve seen juvenile Bald Eagles soaring overhead several times (and once I saw one try to take some prey from a nearby detention pond!). They’re very cool.

This was cool mostly just in how close the hawk came to my head, how close it landed, and how long it stayed there. (Just not quite long enough for me to get a picture. )
